Considering Riven was the best Myst title, I'm not particularly surprised that Obduction takes less time to beat. So long, in fact, I didn't know what to do with my time when it was over. Only 17 Hours? I put a lot more time than that into Riven. I can't get anywhere in Obduction, currently, but maybe it will make more sense later. I have dropped other games and gone back to them months later, and suddenly they make more sense.

There are certain locations where you can even see a bright flash of light directly across from you showing where you were just teleported from. I'm not sure what you think you're seeing, but that's patently false: when teleporting across a cell's outer membrane, you always wind up at the exact opposite point across the sphere from where you entered. You should be able to exploit that fact in order to get to certain places that you haven't been yet. Whenever you walk through the border surrounding Hunrath, you're teleported 180 degrees from where you entered, so you come out on the exact opposite side of the Hunrath sphere. The "blue world" is actually an alien world that Hunrath was plopped down on and is sealed off from.
(your friend behind the steel door) said during one of his speeches, you're basically stuck inside a huge "cell" of terrain scooped out of the Arizona desert. You mention the blue world being "unusable scenery," but have you paid attention to just where you're winding up when you "jump" through it? If you listened to what C.W. I don't really know what to tell you other than you may just need to think a bit differently than you have been. There are set mechanics to Obduction's world, and they function in predictable ways. It's a different sort of logic than the Myst universe's Linking Books, but it's very much there. No offense, but Obduction has every bit as much of a logical progression as Myst or Riven did.
